Three ways to read your age, not just one number

Pick your date of birth and the calculator breaks your age into years, months, and days — the form most people actually mean by "how old am I." It also reports your total days lived and the countdown to your next birthday. Leave "Age As Of" on today for your age right now, or set it to any other date to answer questions like how old you were at a wedding or how old you will be when a deadline arrives.

How old is someone born 15 March 1990?

Take a birth date of 15 March 1990 and an "as of" date of 1 June 2026. The calculator counts whole years first — 1990 to 2026 is 36 years — then the leftover months from 15 March to 1 June (2 months), then the trailing days (17). The result reads 36 years, 2 months, 17 days. Measured straight through, that same span is 13,227 total days lived. Change the "as of" date and every figure recomputes for that moment.

The edge cases an age count quietly assumes

"Age" sounds exact, but a few choices sit underneath the number. Months are uneven, so the months-and-days breakdown depends on how the leftover days are clamped — 31 January plus one month is treated as the end of February, not a non-existent 31 February. The total-days figure counts calendar days and ignores time zones and the hour of birth, so it can be off by a day if you cross the date line or compare against a moment rather than a date. Leap years are handled, but a 29 February birthday has no exact anniversary in common years, and conventions for "when" it falls differ. Finally, this measures elapsed time, not legal age — drinking, voting, and pension ages follow local rules that a day count does not capture.

Questions people ask about calculating age

How is my exact age calculated?

Your exact age is calculated by finding the difference between your date of birth and today's date (or any "as of" date you choose). The calculator counts full years first, then remaining full months, then remaining days — correctly accounting for leap years and the varying lengths of each month.

How many days old am I?

Your total days lived is the number of calendar days that have passed since your date of birth up to and including today. For example, someone born on 1 January 1990 would be about 13,144 days old on 1 January 2026. Use the calculator above to find your precise count.

How does the next birthday countdown work?

The calculator finds the next occurrence of your birth month and day from today's date. If your birthday has already passed this calendar year, it shows the countdown to next year's birthday. If today is your birthday, it shows 0 days — happy birthday!

What if I was born on 29 February (leap day)?

If you were born on 29 February, the calculator correctly handles your birthday in non-leap years. For birthday countdown purposes, 28 February or 1 March can be used depending on convention; this calculator uses 28 February in non-leap years so your countdown is as close as possible to your actual birth date.
