How this converter works
Pick a category, choose your from and to units, and type a value — every result is computed by converting your input to a common base unit, then out to the target unit. That two-step pivot is what lets a single tool span length, weight, volume, area, speed, and temperature without a separate formula table per pair.
Step through 5 kilometers to miles
Convert 5 km to miles. The tool first normalizes kilometers to the base unit (meters): 5 km × 1,000 = 5,000 m. Then it divides by the meters-per-mile constant: 5,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.107 miles. The same pivot runs in reverse — 3.107 miles × 1,609.344 ≈ 5,000 m ÷ 1,000 = 5 km — so every conversion is reversible and rounding-stable. Swap in any value and the base-unit pivot does the rest.
Scope, precision, and where to go instead
This converter covers length, weight, volume, area, speed, and temperature between common metric and imperial units, and it uses internationally standardized conversion factors (for example 1 inch = exactly 25.4 mm). Two things to keep in mind. First, results are rounded for display, so they are ideal for cooking, travel, DIY, and shipping estimates but not for legally certified measurement, lab calibration, or engineering tolerances that demand full precision. Second, volume uses US customary units by default — a US gallon (3.78541 L) is smaller than a UK Imperial gallon (4.54609 L), and "fluid ounces" differ between the two systems, so confirm which standard your recipe or spec expects. For temperature specifically, this tool gives quick Celsius/Fahrenheit/Kelvin conversions, but if you work with temperature often — including the Rankine scale, quick-fill reference points, and side-by-side display of all scales at once — our dedicated temperature converter is purpose-built for it.
Common unit conversion questions
How many feet in a meter?
1 meter equals exactly 3.28084 feet (or 3 feet 3.37 inches). Conversely, 1 foot = 0.3048 m. Use the length tab above to convert any value between meters, feet, inches, centimeters, kilometers, and miles.
How many kg in a pound?
1 pound = 0.453592 kg. Conversely, 1 kg = 2.20462 lbs. The weight converter handles kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, and metric tons.
How many liters in a gallon?
1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. 1 liter = 0.264172 US gallons. Note the UK Imperial gallon is larger at 4.54609 liters. This converter uses US measurements.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Formula: F = (C × 9/5) + 32. Example: 100°C = 212°F. Reverse: C = (F − 32) × 5/9. Use the Temp tab for instant conversions including Kelvin.
