From bill to per-person share in one tap

Punch in the bill, pick a tip percentage, and say how many people are splitting it. The tip, the grand total, and each person's slice all land at once — there is no "calculate" button to chase. The quick buttons cover the everyday 15–25% range; the Custom field is there for the odd 12% or a flat round-up.

Splitting a $58.40 dinner two ways at 20%

Say dinner came to $58.40 and the service earned a 20% tip. Multiply the bill by 0.20: 58.40 × 0.20 = $11.68 in tip. Add that back to the bill for a total of $70.08. Set "Split between" to 2 and the calculator divides the total — $35.04 each. Drop the rate to 18% and the same bill tips $10.51; raise it to 25% and it tips $14.60.

Where a tip calculator stops being the right call

This tool does the arithmetic; it does not read the room. Tipping norms are local — the 15–20% US baseline is high by world standards, and in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already built in or tipping is modest or unexpected, so tipping by US habit can over-pay. The calculator also tips on whatever number you type: enter the post-tax total and you tip on the tax too, which most etiquette guides advise against. Large parties often have an automatic gratuity already printed on the check — add a percentage on top and you may be double-tipping. And it splits evenly, so if one person ordered the steak and another a salad, an even split is convenient, not fair.

Common questions about tipping and splitting

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

Standard restaurant tipping in the US is 15–20% for adequate service, 20–25% for excellent service, and 10–15% for poor service. Many people default to 18–20% as a baseline. For takeout or counter service, 10–15% is typical but optional.

How do you calculate a tip?

To calculate a tip, multiply the pre-tax bill amount by the tip percentage as a decimal. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10. Add the tip to the bill to get the total: $50 + $10 = $60. When splitting, divide the total by the number of people.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service you received. However, tipping on the post-tax total is also common and makes little practical difference on most bills — the gap is usually just a dollar or two.

How do I split a bill evenly with friends?

Add up the total bill including tip, then divide by the number of people. Our tip calculator does this automatically — just enter the number of people in the 'Split between' field and the per-person amount updates instantly.
